This is one of those delightful little finds we discovered purely by accident. Mamma Mia's might have been easily overlooked had we not set our sights on 18Hundred and then been summarily dismissed by that establishment's hostess Because we didn't realize we needed reservations. She actually did us a favor When we decided to go next door to Mama Mia's!.
As we walked through the entrance we were immediately greeted as though we were old friends. How nice it was to be greeted by smiling, welcoming staff... The decor is understated Italian, simple but elegant...Tablecloths and cloth napkins. The word "special" comes to mind.
The menu offered variety, Some with a twist on traditional dishes and others intriguing. My Companions made a variety of choices from the menu such as the absolutely delicious short ribs ravioli, porcini sacchetti, chicken saltimbacca, soups, salads and even a humongous hamburger! All were absolutely delicious. I will not try to dissect each item... Just let it be said that they end product of each dish, Ingredients and the skill used to combine them was outstanding and in the words of the eminent Pete Tittl, Mamma Mia's can be enthusiastically recommended for a "fine dining experience." -

Four stars for everything! Service was prompt and the food was also deliciously flavored. Can't say anything bad about this place, I am always satisfied and filled. I would love to come back here next time I am around.
No more words. Keep it up! -

It was a Fri night, 7pm reservations. 4 people.
We had a very nice time.
Our friends chose the place this time and it was nice to go downtown for once.
Parking was no issue on the street, nearby.
We were walked through the bar area entrance, past the kitchen into a larger dining area. Our table was waiting for us. Adored the fresh roses on the table in a vase.
Our waiter was great, very attentive and was patient with us as we perused the menu (thankfully, not too large a menu) and he made recommendations for appies and for the special of the night. He was sweet and personable.
2 of us got the special of the night - scallops with penne. I am always worried that the pasta will be overcooked at new place I try as I am picky about this and would prevent me from eating the pasta portion but it was good! Could have used maybe 1 minute less on the boil but hey, I like my pasta quite al dente.
The meat sauce was good too. I had wished for a little more of it.
The scallops were well done and nicely seasoned. 3 on the plate and were of the large variety. I had a little box of food left to take home with me that made for a nice breakfast the next AM. I also had a glass of Moscato and for $8, it was not a large glass however quite delicious.
One in our party got the Italian sandwich with fries and he liked it, could not even eat all of it.
Another got the short rib ravioli and he loved it and gave it a 5. He said his Peroni beer (bottle) was good and cold too.
A few little things that prevented a 5 star review here are;
The restaurant was pretty warm inside. Could be an easy fix with lowered A/C.
I did not love the table bread as I prefer it to be served softer and warmer. It was a good vehicle for the leftover calamari sauce though. Man, that was a great appy choice. Chunks of calamari as opposed to the normal rings. Not fried either. Grilled! SO yummy, I want some right now. I REALLY loved the shaved, GOOD parm cheese that came on the calamari and the dishes. The calamari could have used lemon wedges but I would ask for some next time.
Lastly, our server let us know he had to split to go to his next job so we could pay him. He was tipped handsomely and he was gone. Which left us with no one to fill our waters ever again. Sad too because everyone seemed friendly but we had no connection to any other service once he left and as mentioned, it was hot in there and we really needed water!
Oh well. We ended up being the last people out (I think they close the dining area at 10pm? Bar area was still hopping!)
We vowed that we would come back.
It was a tasty meal with good company!
*Update - reported by our friend that had eaten the Italian sandwich that it had made him ill. He was up most of the night because of it. Just a note. I would not recommend ordering that. The waiter had mentioned that the sandwich contained scraps of meat that the chef did not use for other main dishes?* -

Eating at Mama Mia is such a treat. A friend and I decided last minute to dine here on a Friday night. Obviously we didn't have reservations. It was very full and busy but we were able to get a seat at a cute both in about 25 minutes so it wasn't that bad. I will say though that it was very confusing when it came to checking in with the hostess. Their was no hostess stand at the front entrance or bar entrance of the restaurant so it got pretty annoying trying to track a hostess down. Luckily we decided to walk towards the kitchen and ran into a hostess.
The bar area was pretty packed due to people dinning at the bar so we couldn't even order a drink to wait. Which is understandable, but it just means you have to wait outside. I feel like more money could be made if they had space designated to order drinks only.
Our dinning experience was exceptional! The food was so darn delicious! Our server made great recommendations on wine and entrées. We really loved the house red wine! Coincidentally it's called Mama Mia! It's a red blend, a bit more sweet than I'm use too, but it was very easy to drink and paired well with the food.
We had the Bocconcini (mozzarella balls) for an appetizer. They melted in your mouth. They come in a red meat sauce so you can use the bread they bring you to scoop up the left over sauce. We had to do something to balance out our meal so we also ordered the Mama Mia salad. It had such refreshing flavors. The pistachios and lemon truly paired well with the pepper flavor of the arugula. It did take a while to get our main entrees but our server kept checking in on us and updating us on the status of our food, so we were not bothered by it. For our main course we shared the Porcini sacchetti and the White Pasta with chicken. They both had great flavors. The chicken was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. But the star of the night was the Porcini! They literally exploded in your mouth with flavor. I wish I could have them everyday!
I'm telling y'all ! GO TO MAMA MIA !!! -
